What is Active Learning?

Active learning is a teaching method that encourages participants to take an active role in the learning experience, rather than passively receiving information. In a contact center, this most often takes the form of roleplay or AI-powered conversation simulation, such as Zenarate Perform, where agents practice real scenarios instead of reading scripts or watching videos.

Faster Speed to Proficiency

Participants who actively practice retain and apply information better than those who passively absorb it, which leads to faster onboarding and quicker ramp-up for new hires. AI-powered simulation gives agents a safe environment to practice handling difficult customer interactions, building confidence before they ever take a live call.

Improved Problem-Solving Through Roleplay

Rather than memorizing a script, active learning asks agents to think critically and develop solutions to real scenarios. Roleplay exercises, where agents practice a wide range of interactions including difficult or emotional ones, build the adaptability that a purely knowledge-based training program can't.

Increased Engagement and Retention

Agents who actively participate in training are more invested in the material and more likely to remember what they've learned, which reduces the need for repeat training sessions and builds a deeper, more durable understanding of the concepts being taught.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is active learning the same as hands-on training?

They're closely related. Active learning is the broader educational principle; roleplay and AI simulation are specific methods that put active learning into practice in a contact center setting.

How much of contact center training should be active vs. passive?

There's no universal ratio, but most programs use passive methods to build baseline knowledge, then shift to active methods, roleplay, simulation, to build applied skill before agents go live.

Does active learning work for compliance training?

Yes, and it arguably matters more there. Passively reading a compliance policy doesn't confirm an agent can deliver a required disclosure correctly under pressure; practicing it in a realistic scenario does.
